What initially grabs your attention in The Five People You Meet in Heaven? What holds it?

When I see the title of the book, I feel very strange. I have a lot of questions for this novel. “The Five People You Meet in Heaven.” What kind of people you meet in heaven? What they look like? Where is heaven? What the heaven looks like? I want a travel to go to heaven, how to get there? I really interest to get these answers of these questions from this novel. After I finish reading“The End”, I have felt strange again. If a person dead, what will happen next? In my opinion, death means the end. After death, nothing will happen. However, death is the beginning of the novel. Will happen anything after death? I really confuse about it, but I am curious about what will happen next. I believe when I finish reading this novel, I could find my answer. After death, could you find something or nothing?

Group#1 Discussion Chapter 4&5

1.Do you think it’s Eddie killed the blue man? Why?

I do not think so.There must be some problem with blue man’s heart, or he would never be killed in the small accident. It can be called as “disease” not “not strong”. A person with heart disease is not allowed to drive in some countries because it both dangerous to the person and other people. He knows his heart is “not strong”, so he should not drive a car.

2.If the blue man hit Eddie with the Ford car, what would happen to him then?

If Eddie was hit, may be he would killed in the accident. To the blue man, I think he cannot survive either. Because he has a heart disease, he will get the “heart attack” too when he saw someone was killed by him.

3.How do you know about Eddie’s father in these two chapter?

From these two chapter, I know he is a maintenance of the park, the same with Eddie. He likes play cards and smoking. The relationship between Eddie and his father may be not that well.

4. How the blue man become blue?

A chemist gave him a bottle of silver nitrate and told him to take it everyday. But it is poisonous. Then he take too much of this so called medicine and his skin turned into the strange color.

5.After Eddie’s death, what is the thing Eddie cares most?

It in the accident, whether he saved the girl’s life or not.

2.Share something in your life that has begun as another thing ended, and the events that followed.
      In our life, there are many things as Albom says” all endings are also beginnings”. For example, we graduate from our universities, it means our school-days end, and then we try to have jobs, we will have some new experiences and some new things will begin. For me, when I left my hometown and fly here, my new life will begin and past events ended. Besides, when I study here, I need to learn ELI first. If I finish all the ELI classes and take academic classes next semester, I will have a new and good start. It also can indicate that something has begun as another thing ended.

Question: Who do you think Eddie will meet in heaven?

Eddie will meethis father and Marguerite .

The first person Eddie will meet is his father. The chapter" Today is Eddie's birthday" describes the first meet between Eddie and his father. He is the first family member that Eddie meet. When Eddie goes to heaven, I guess his father will welcome him, take care of him. Like the beginning of Eddie born. Everything will begins at the end. Eddie will have a new life in heaven.

The second person Eddie will meet is Marguerite. Marguerite is a very important person for Eddie. She is first love of Eddie, obviously she is the one. She has a profound effect on him. Eddie always see the moment that Marguerite waving over her shoulder and her dark hair falling over one eye. She is a mark in Eddie's memory during his whole life. He can't forgets her and wants to get marry with her, but in chapter one Marguerite just in Eddie' memory. I think Eddie will meet his true-love in heaven and continue their love.

At the start of The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Albom says that "all endings are also beginnings." In general, what does this mean? How does it relate to this story in particular?

In general, the meaning of “all endings are also beginning” is there is always having a new story begin or life follow the last story or life end. Which means you finished a period time of your life, and another period of time will start. For example, in our lives, we need to experience many different stages. Every stage ends means the other stage begins. It just likes that when we finished the primary school, we began the middle school, when our school days are end, and we will begin another stage of our lives- working. The name of the book is The Five People You Meet in Heaven. It is talking about a story that the five people whom Eddie will meet in heaven after he died. His story of his life is end in the world, but the new story that happened in heaven is just beginning.

Share something in your life that has begun as another thing ended, and the events that followed.

             Most south Korean men must go to the military to protect the north Korean military because that is duty. However, the military life is very hard becasue many soldiers are stressed from many thing such as new environment, missing their family, and heavy physical work. I also went to the military. So, I thought that my enjoyable life is ended at that time. Most young men who have the same situation with me also have the same thought with me. When I entered the military. I feel that it is not bad because the military is also society that many people live togeter. People in the military are at similar situation, so we felt that other people is another me. Therefore, I made many new friends, and I learned the patience. Thus, I believe that the event is my life's end and new begining.

First Chapter, Attention Grabbers

The start of the book is so interesting. The first chapter is “ The End “ but Eddie still alive, so we know he is going to die soon! And then the author starts the countdown to Eddie's death. The author trays to tell us that Eddie will die soon and explains how usually people go with their business with no idea there is a death on their way.

Also the author grabs my attention when the chapter has a little about Eddie's birthday, he explained a small thing that the reader knows that it is related to an upcoming activities in Eddie’s life, but we still have no clue what is it. Furthermore, It is interesting that he died on his birthday.

Something else that was an attention grabber was the title, because of the fact that the reader was given no information of who are the five people you meet in heaven.

4. what happened for Eddie's last ten years? he had forgotten what it was like to walk without wincing or to sit without struggling to find comfort for his his lower back.

2.      Share something in your life that has begun as another thing ended, and the events that followed.

              I have many things in my life that I cannot forget. Today, I will write one thing that is very important for my life. In 2010 summer, I decided to study abroad. This resolve was changed my life. When I first time came to America, all the things were changed, my friends my room, and my life. I was very sad about that because I got a culture shock. I did not want to do anything. I thought that was the end of my life because I cannot stay with my family anymore and I need do anything by myself. After couple month, I gradually adapt the American life. I found a new friends, new room and new life. I have been taking the English class in the English language institute until now. And I found many international friends. I also found many Chinese friends form here. I am very happy about that and my English is getting better. Right now, I think study abroad is a new life for me.

It means that there are no endings for enythings each end means start of something new.
  The story demonstrates the end of Eddie life,but he will start something new. we will know during
read the rest of the story.

How did you feel when you read the final moments for Eddie?

      When I read the final moment for Eddie, I felt very sad at that time. I expect that Eddie could save the little girl, but he didn't make it. Eddie's dead was too suddenly in my mind. After read the final moment for Eddie, I have a question about next story.  In my opinion, dead means nothing happen after that, but the Eddie's dead is just a beginning. There are a lot of words to show and explain the next story, so I felt curious for the next narration. What would happen after Eddie's dead? Did he return to the world again? What was the heaven looks like? A lot of questions need this novel to explain. But after read "all ending are also beginning," I felt quiet. I know Eddie had begun a new experience. Eddie might not a mankind, just liked a soul or something. I am looking forward to read  next stage of the novel.

Who do you think Eddie will meet in heaven? Why?

I think Eddie will meet Marguerite, Joe and the girl he saved called Amy or Annie. Marguerite is the girl he loved in his life. She is one of the most important in Eddie’s life. In chapter 1, the author does mention what happened to them then. And as his true love, there will be many things between them. He will also meet Joe in heaven. Joe is Eddie’s elder brother. Eddie is younger, but he can protect his brother by fighting with other children in the street. He is another important person in Eddie’s life. Eddie may meet the girl he saved in heaven. As a maintenance of the park, Eddie knows the girl and made a rabbit with pipe cleaners for her. In the time he was dying, he was thinking about if he saved the girl. Though she is not as important as the Marguerite and Joe to Eddie, she is an important role in the novel. So she will meet Eddie in heaven too.

who do you think Eddie will meet in the heaven?

  I think Eddie will meet his parents, because i guess his parents are two of important people during Eddie's life, his parents give his life and all the things, so Eddie should have something that want to say to his parents. Except his parents he may meet Margrate, because she is Eddie's true love, so Eddie shoul have many things wants to tell her, and i think Margrate should be one of person that Eddie miss alot, because, before Eddie die, Eddie still think about her. As other two people, I guess one is Amy, and one is Joe. For Amy, may be just because she exist in the first chapter and Eddie save her life, and Joe, Eddie's brother, because Eddie helps Joe stoped a fight, but Joe not talk with Eddie because of his self-esteem. so i guess these five people are who Eddie will meet in the heaven.
